Rally Special Stages: Calheta

By Pedro Calado, co-driver "It is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult stages of the rally. Impossible to do "by eye", given the numerous curves and areas of great driving. This year it is new, starting down Paúl, in a fast area and then entering the Regional Road towards Ponta do Pargo. Very fast at the start. For a good "crono" you need a lot of confidence in the notes, believe and a lot of recognition. Final part very chained and fast in the area of Maloeira. In this part of the island the weather is always very uncertain, which sometimes forces a "lottery" of tyres. Very beautiful, but very difficult. Attention if there is fog."

Rally Special Stages: Ponta do Sol

by Pedro Calado, co-driver "Initial part until the Carvalhal junction, always uphill, with a flat area, very demanding and careful. In the area of Carvalhal, with spectacular areas and a large crowd. Climb to the Paúl da Serra mountain, until the end of the section, with a lot of driving, with many straights, very fast areas, with some hooked curves, ending in a beautiful area of the mountain. The special stage was changed from previous years, but I think it was to the liking of all participants. Very fast in the climbing area and at the end, to be done with a lot of driving and attention. Good surface."

How is the Portuguese Rally Championship going?

The national rally championship is once again made up of 8 events, but in 2023 there was the departure of the Azores Rallye and the entry of the Casinos do Algarve Rally on dirt surfaces. So far, the rallies Fafe, Felgueiras, Cabreira and Boticas, Casinos do Algarve, Terras d'Aboboreira and de Portugal, which embodied the dirt stage, and, more recently, Castelo Branco, already on tarmac, have been held. Vinho Madeira, Água - Alto Tâmega and Vidreiro Centro de Portugal rallies are still to be completed. The competition was initially led by Craig Breen, who won the opening race but then dropped out in the Algarve. In the south of the country, the "home driver" Ricardo Teodósio won and in Amarante it was Kris Meeke, replacing the late Craig Breen in Hyundai Portugal, who won. The Briton won again in Castelo Branco, but in the WRC race in Portugal the best was Armindo Araújo. Miguel Correia is leading the championship after three second places, a fourth and a sixth. Following him more closely is Teodósio, who, in addition to the victory in the Algarve, has climbed the podium twice more and was fourth in the last event. José Pedro Fontes is third with consecutive positions between fourth and sixth place and a podium finish in the only tarmac rally so far. Armindo Araújo continues in fourth position in a season so far marked by a serious accident in the opening race of the season. Classification: 1st Miguel Correia, 92; 2nd Ricardo Teodósio, 76; 3rd José P.Fontes, 70; 4th Armindo Araújo, 60; 5th Kris Meeke, 56; 6th Bernardo Sousa, 49; 7th Pedro Almeida, 46; 8th Lucas Simões, 34; 9th Craig Breen, 28; 10th Pedro Meireles, 23. 31 drivers are classified.

Rally Special Stages: Câmara de Lobos

By Pedro Calado, co-driver "Start of the rally on Saturday. It is a very particular and difficult stage. Initial area with climbs and very narrow and winding areas, passing through areas of many houses, difficult to recognise by the number of cars and people at the door. A stage that requires a lot of driving and attention. Winding, alternating in the final part, after Eira das Moças and, until the end with fast areas. Requires recognition and thorough knowledge of the section. Good surface and the weather is usually good. Ideal for a good start on Saturday. It always attracts a lot of public, especially in the area of Parque Empresarial and the finish at Cabo Girão."
