Autograph session and recognitions tomorrow

Another Rally Week begins tomorrow. Rali Vinho da Madeira’s programme enters the competitive phase with the start of the reconnaissance sessions by the registered teams. The reconnaissance sessions are carried out by the competitors at controlled speed on the roads to be used during the rally so that the very important progress notes can be collected and confirmed. On Tuesday 1 August, between 08:00 and 18:00, the stages that make up the second stage, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, Calheta and Rosário, can be recognised. At the end of the afternoon, the always very popular autograph session will take place, once again, next to Madeira Casino. Between 9.30 p.m. and 11 p.m., the thousands of fans and enthusiasts who attend will have a unique opportunity to socialise with the 85 registered teams and also to get a closer look at some of the vehicles that, from Thursday, 3rd August, will be on the road thrilling crowds.

How is the Madeira Rally Championship Coral going?

The Madeira Rally Championship has not changed much going into 2023 and comprises the same seven races as last year. The season started in April in São Vicente. On the north coast, Alexandre Camacho got off to a good start and even benefited from a false-start penalty from his biggest opponent. However, with the arrival of the second day of competition, the champion Miguel Nunes managed to cancel the difference that separated him from the front and still impose himself in the event. Everything pointed to the driver of the Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo da Lotes coming to dominate as at the end of the previous season. However, Camacho made tweaks and other changes to the Play Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo and the championship story took a turn. The pace in the regional rallies was dictated by this driver who swept the competition in Calheta in May, Ribeira Brava in June and, more recently, in Machico. With this show of strength, Alexandre Camacho has a good lead in the championship and, with three events to go, Vinho da Madeira, Municipios de Câmara de Lobos e Funchal and 100 à Hora, the title can be quickly surrendered if Miguel Nunes fails to react. Miguel Caires started this year driving a Skoda Fabia R5 and, despite adapting to a much more powerful vehicle than his previous one, he has been in good shape, occupying, with a comfortable margin, the lowest place on the podium of the competition. Rui Pinto, in a Ford Fiesta Rally2, and José Camacho, in a Peugeot 208 T16 R5, have not shown the speed to climb the podium and are, at this stage, fourth and sixth in the championship promoted by the Portuguese Federation of Automobilism and Karting. The Porsche teams have had an irregular presence and performance this year. João Silva has an excellent position, fifth in the absolute standings. The driver of the FX Peugeot 208 Rally4 has dominated the events in his category and, at times, discussed places overall with opponents with more competitive vehicles. In this class, Renato Pita and Artur Quintal, both in Peugeot 208 Rally4, and Dinarte Baptista, with Renault Clio Rally4, have also been in evidence. Classification: 1st Alexandre Camacho, 112; 2nd Miguel Nunes, 89; 3rd Miguel Caires, 63; 4th Rui Pinto, 38; 5th João Silva, 36; 6th José Camacho, 24; 7th Paulo Mendes, 20; 8th Renato Pita, 18; 9th José P. Fontes, 17; 10th Artur Quintal, both in Peugeot 208 Rally4. 33 drivers are classified.

Winning once again

Alexandre Camacho defends the victory he achieved in 2022 at the Rali Vinho da Madeira and his goal is, "obviously, to be back in the fight for the podium. The ideal would be to win the competition once again. Even though I know that this edition will be very competitive. The rally will have many fast and experienced drivers from the regional, national and international level. In addition, the new Skoda will also be an unknown. We expect a very competitive rally. In 2023 the difficulties are also increased because the first stage rounds include a wide geographical variation, with different routes and sometimes different weather conditions. All this will make the choice of tyres and settings very difficult. In any case, we will try again. I would also ask the public to pay attention to the safety recommendations so that the rally is a party." The record holder, with five wins, of victories in the Rali Vinho da Madeira is 43 years old and made his first rally in 2001 with a Toyota Yaris. Throughout his career, he has driven Citroën Saxo, Citroën Saxo Kit-Car, Peugeot 206 S1600, Peugeot 207 S2000, Porsche 997 GT3, Peugeot 208 T16, Skoda Fabia R5 and, since mid-2022, Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. He was the winner of the FIA European Rally Trophy in 2018 and absolute regional champion six times, in 2008, 2009, 2015 and between 2017 and 2019. He is the leader of the Madeira Coral Rally Championship.

Rally Special Stages: Cidade de Santana

by Pedro Calado, co-driver "Very fast and demanding special stage. This year longer than usual. It starts climbing with some hairpins and fast and chained areas, passing next to the first tunnel, with an exit area that deserves attention. Alternating between fast areas, with climbs, descents, with very narrow areas and others very fast, where all attention is needed. The middle part of the section, between Curral Velho, Silveira and Lombo do Curral requires great driving and attention to some "mousetraps". The final part, from Feiteira de Cima to Eiras is simply spectacular in terms of driving and speed. The second passage through this section will be held at the end of the day and visibility will depend a lot on the weather conditions. The public thanks you."

How is the Peugeot Rally Cup Iberica going?

The Peugeot Rally Cup Iberica is a mono-brand competition organised by the French brand and whose calendar includes six events, half in Portugal and the other in Spain. At this point, the Terras d'Aboboreira, Vodafone de Portugal and Ourense rallies have already been completed. There are three more events to go: Vinho da Madeira, Princesa de Asturias and RACC Catalunya. At the top of this trophy is the Portuguese Pedro Antunes, who won in the Terras d'Aboboreira and Ourense rallies and did not go beyond fourth place in the WRC round disputed in our country. The driver from Torres Vedras has a good advantage over the Spaniards Iago Gabeiras and Sergi Perez. Gabeiras was second and third in the first two rallies of the year but dropped out in the only one so far held in his country. Perez, who dropped out in the opening race but has been second and fourth more recently, has almost the opposite story. Aleksandr Semenov, who has never been on the podium, is fourth ahead of Ricardo Sousa, who was best in the Rally of Portugal but dropped out in the other two events. Classification: 1st Pedro Antunes, 72; 2nd Iago Gabeiras, 41; 3rd Sergi Perez, 38; 4th Aleksandr Semenov, 32; 5th Ricardo Sousa, 26; 6th Ernesto Cunha, 24; 7th Alex Español, 20; 8th Santiago Garcia, 17; 9th Hugo Lopes, 14; 10th Paulo Roque, 14. 20 competitors are classified.

Being in the fight for victory

Miguel Nunes starts Rali Vinho da Madeira determined to "do our best and be in the top places. This year the list is very well composed and there will be a lot of competition for the victory. We want to be in that fight and at that level of competitiveness. The RVM is always fought at a good pace, from start to finish, and it also requires some luck. We've already experienced that, something that makes us lose our way. In this competition, you have to follow the ideal line of trajectory for the entire length and you can easily lose focus for a few moments, which is penalising given the large number of candidates. The sections of the first stage this year have a wider geographical spread, which will make it even more challenging to make the right tyre choice. Everything counts and it can be quite difficult to have the most suitable tyres everywhere." Winner of the 2020 Rali Vinho da Madeira, Nunes is 42 years old and made his rallying debut in 2005 with a Citroën C2 R2. He has been behind the wheel of cars such as the Peugeot 206 S1600, Peugeot 207 S2000, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, Ford Fiesta R5, Citroën DS3 R5 and Hyundai i20 R5. He has been the absolute regional champion six times, in 2010, 2012, 2014 and from 2020 to 2022. He currently crews a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo and is second in the Madeira Coral Rally Championship.

Rally curiosities: Peugeot is the most represented brand

Peugeot is the most represented brand in the next edition of Rali Vinho da Madeira. Much due to the presence of the Peugeot Rally Cup Iberica, the lion's house is used by well over a quarter of the caravan. At the starting park, in front of Funchal City Hall, there will be 20 208 Rally4, 2 208 R2, 2 306 S16/GTI and 1 208 T16 R5. Also French, Citroën has the second largest representation, equipping 11 competitors. The entry list includes 3 C3 Rally2, 3 C2 R2, 2 Saxo, 1 Saxo Kit-Car, 1 AX and 1 DS3 R1. Two brands will be defended by 8 teams. Skoda, with 6 Fabia Rally2 Evo, 1 Fabia RS Rally2 and 1 Fabia R5, and Toyota, with 6 Yaris, 1 Yaris Proto and 1 Starlet, are in that situation. Ford, with 2 Fiesta Rally2, 2 Fiesta R2T, 1 Fiesta R5, 1 Fiesta Rally4 and 1 Escort Mk II, and Renault, with 3 Clio R3T, 2 Clio Rally4, 1 Clio Rally5 and 1 Clio RS, have 7 units. Hyundai, i20N Rally2, and Porsche, 3 991 GT3 and 1 997 GT3, will have 4. The Mitsubishi logo will be on 3 cars and VW, Alpine and Fiat will have a solitary presence.

Rally Special Stages: Palheiro Ferreiro

by Pedro Calado, co-driver "Classic and very difficult special stage, due to its length, difficulty and concentration. Initial part, from Palheiro Ferreiro to Terreiro da Luta, in a very fast and very technical driving area for about 7 km. We also pass through the spectacular area of Choupana with a beautiful (and cunning) jump, followed by the ascent of Ribeira das Cales to the South Gate of Chão da Lagoa. From there, we enter the mountains where all attention is little, especially if it is foggy or drizzling. Lots of driving, agile and absolute concentration. After the exit of the North Gate to Poiso, with fast descents, followed by the always spectacular Poiso intersection, where we have the company of a lot of public. Until the finish we have only about 500 meters. The weather conditions are very uncertain and the fog can help to mess up the times. Good ground in almost all the section. Attention only in the area of Chão da Lagoa, with the cobblestone and some killer bumps".

Three Rally competitors in Rome

The Rally di Roma Capital, the sixth ERC event, was held this weekend and three of the teams that will be taking part in the Rali Vinho da Madeira later this week were on the Italian tarmac. The race was won by Andrea Crugnola with a Citroën C3 Rally2 and in second place was Giandomenico Basso, driving a Skoda Fabia RS Rally2. The Italian driver was always fighting for the podium places and, during the first stage, in a lively duel with Yoann Bonato. From the moment the Frenchman punctured, Basso was in a comfortable position in second place, but he didn't let up, finishing just over 20 seconds behind the winner. Italian Simone Campedelli didn't get off to a good start but quickly recovered positions and looked assured of a place in the top five. However, the Skoda Fabia Raly2 Evo driver would be another of those who punctured and fell many places, concluding the event in 12th place. Miguel Caires from Madeira was also at the competition, using a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo. In what was his debut in a championship event, he drove between the 30th and 40th fastest in the class until he punctured, spent a long time on a rim, and was forced to give up. He returned for the second stage in super-rally form, back to the level he had been running in the opening kilometres, and crossed the finish line in 68th position.

Rally Special Stages: Campo de Golfe

By Pedro Calado, co-driver "This special stage starts on the road of the Golf Club, in a very fast area, with some bumps made deep, especially until we reach the Hotel do Santo curve. From there, we descend to the Fonte de Santo António area, with very technical and narrow areas, which requires extra care, especially if it is wet. The road from Ribeira de Machico to Portela and from there to Serragem (Santo), passing through the always spectacular "snail" of Portela, with a lot of driving and chained areas that requires a good knowledge of the section. Good tarmac and clean roadsides. The weather and fog can help to "mess up" tyre choices and can be decisive at this special stage of the race. This year we are doing the special stage in the morning and afternoon.".
